Supporting the automation of TransGrid’s substations

Client: Transgrid
Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Date: November 2010 – December 2014

Providing specialist advice and detailed technical input for substation automation and asset refurbishment.

Background

TransGrid manages and operates the high-voltage transmission network in the Australian state of New South Wales, comprising almost 100 substations and 13 000 km of lines and cables. In 2009, TransGrid sought companies to provide design and installation services to deliver its major capital works program of $2.4 billion between 2009 and 2014.

Solution

Entura obtained a place on the design panel for TransGrid’s substation control systems. The Substation Control System Design Panel was involved in providing the detailed scope of works and transparent pricing for substation automation design and associated testing for projects, from minor works through to major substation refurbishments, and provided specialist advice on high-risk projects.

Entura also provided specialist technical advice to TransGrid on its existing GE Harris Substation Automation System (SAS), including solutions for upgrading and replacing equipment. Entura provided a complete service including the initial scope of works, SAS design and configuration, testing and commissioning support.

Outcome

Entura delivered a large number of substation control system design projects for TransGrid to help it achieve its capital works program. Due to the high level of service and technical advice Entura provided to TransGrid, the contract was extended for another year.

Due to Entura’s long experience with multi-vendor automation systems and interfacing to other assets, Entura provided strategic advice to TransGrid on some of its more unique and higher risk substation control system projects.
