Remote area power systems (RAPS) are increasingly allowing remote communities and industries to reduce costs and become more self-sufficient and sustainable.
By integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind with storage and diesel generation, RAPS can provide reliable, secure power that is cheaper and cleaner than relying on fossil-fuel generation alone.
As part of Hydro Tasmania, which owns and operates the world leading King Island hybrid off-grid system, Entura has built on the experience of developing our own RAPS to help clients across the Asia-Pacific region achieve their goals of reducing operating costs, improving power reliability and system security, and increasing sustainability.
We’ve learned that the key to handling intermittent renewable generation (from sources such as wind, solar, hydro or biomass) is in successfully integrating these generation sources with enabling technologies such as flywheels, dynamic resistors and storage to achieve the best system performance, reliability and security of supply.
We also understand how important it is to have suitable regulatory frameworks and supportive policies, and programs such as energy efficiency and demand-side response.
Megawatt-scale off-grid power systems
Although commercially viable solutions combining solar power with battery storage are already available and can provide 100% renewable energy in small off-grid systems, to cost-effectively achieve high renewable penetration in larger remote systems, new and innovative solutions are needed. And that’s where Entura can help, as we draw on our experience to design and deliver inventive, sustainable and successful megawatt-scale systems.
Through our experience with hybrid off-grid systems and RAPS projects, we have developed a world-leading approach to off-grid and fringe-of-grid megawatt-scale development that is independent of any particular suppliers, is appropriate across a large range of systems (up to 20 MW or more), and provides the most appropriate renewable energy, enabling technologies and clever control systems.
